Neutral

A neutral colour scheme excludes colour. It creates a sense of calmness and is easy on the eyes. Neutral colours include beige, black, white, taupe, brown, ivory and grey. (Not just boring variations of beige!)

In order to avoid creating a flat and boring looking space, be sure to incorporate different textures, patterns, finishes and materials into the layout to provide more interest. This could be done through glossy furnishings, metallic finishings, various wood textures and brick finishes.

Once you have created a neutral colour scheme that you are happy with, you may like to incorporate a soft accent colour. Think carefully about what colour you would like to choose. The colour doesn’t need to be bright. Soft and pale colours usually work well, while bold colours can give a room attitude. The accent colour can be introduced through artwork and accessories. The great thing about a neutral colour scheme is that it can be easily updated through simply changing the accent colour.

Tip

When selecting neutral colours – be conscious of undertones. Place the colour that you are interested in beside similar ones to check for this. White can be deceiving. It is impossible to know this from looking at the colour while it stands alone.
